Reposted: CAS has just become aware of a potential incompatibility issue involving the SciFinder structure drawing editor and Java Version 6 (JRE 1.6), update 24, released by Oracle on February 15, 2011. The issue affects only the web version of SciFinder on the Windows operating system. Customers using SciFinder 2007, SciFinder Scholar 2007, or the web version of SciFinder on a Macintosh OS are not affected.

To prevent any negative impact to your SciFinder experience, we suggest that users of the web version of SciFinder on Windows delay installation of Java Version 6, update 24. CAS is fully engaged in identifying the source of this potential issue and will update you further when we have more information.

UAMS Library Director Appointed to NLM Board of Regents

Mary L. Ryan, MLS, MPH, the Director of the UAMS Library, has been appointed by Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, to serve a four year term on the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Board of Regents. She is one of only two health sciences librarians currently serving on the Board. Eight other Board members were appointed from leaders in the fields of medicine, dentistry, public health, hospital administration, pharmacology, bioinformatics, etc. There are also nine ex officio Board members, including the Surgeon General and the Librarian of Congress.

The NLM Board of Regents meets three times per year to advise, consult with, and make recommendations to the HHS Secretary, the Director of the National Institutes of Health, and the Director of NLM on matters related to the Library. Policy matters may include the materials collected, the services provided, and the research conducted by the Library, including the research and development done at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), which maintains PubMed, MedlinePlus, genome databases and many other resources used by scientists throughout the world on a daily basis. In addition, the Board reviews and makes recommendations about grant applications, bioinformatics training programs, and contracts funded by the Library, and advises the Library on the development of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, of which the UAMS Library is an active member. Ms. Ryan’s term on the NLM Board of Regents will expire in September of 2014.

New PubMed Images Database

The National Library of Medicine has released a new images database called Images. It uses the familiar PubMed search interface and includes over three million images available from PubMed Central. It can be searched by keyword, author, journal, and PubMed ID number and the search results are provided by relevance ranking.

The UAMS Library will host a hands-on TOXNET: Toxicology & Environmental Information training class on Wednesday, November 17th from 9 AM – 12 Noon in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) classroom located on the 5th floor of the UAMS Library. There is no fee for the class but we do need you to register to insure adequate seating and workbooks.

This is a 3-hour hands-on class intended for inexperienced users. It is designed to introduce participants to the different databases available on the National Library of Medicine’s TOXNET database. Attendees will gain experience locating toxicology, chemical, and other hazardous substance information. Databases to be covered include: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), LactMed, TOXLINE, TOXMAP, Household Products Database and ChemIDplus.
Participants will be able to:

Identify the five types of databases in TOXNET
Select the database most appropriate to their information need.
Demonstrate proper searching techniques

There will be 3.0 hours of Medical Library Association (MLA) continuing education credits awarded. The class is being taught by Michelle Malizia, Associate Director, National Network of Libraries of Medicine - South Central Region (NN/LM SCR).

Parking is available in Parking 2 for $1.25 for the first hour, plus $.75 for each additional hour up to a maximum of $7 per day.

Eugene Stead was active at Duke University for more than 50 years and chaired the Department of Medicine there from 1947-1967. Please refer to the campus policy on inclement weather and the hospital policy. UAMS employees working at sites outside of Little Rock should consult with their supervisors when bad weather occurs. Students in the various UAMS colleges and graduate school should look to the specific weather policy in their own college to determine what to do when UAMS implements the inclement weather policy.

Employees can participate in the national movement by wearing their favorite red dress, shirt, tie, or Red Dress Pin on Friday, February 5, 2010, to help spread the critical message that "Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear – It's the #1 Killer of Women."

The Heart Truth campaign, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, first introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in February 2003.

Academic Medicine Responds to Haiti Crisis

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has created a new website to provide reliable sources of information about the crisis in Haiti; including notices, fact sheets, links to the many relief efforts underway at AAMC member institutions, and a list of organizations accepting charitable contributions (updated regularly).The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is has also provided a special website about the earthquake and disaster relief efforts. Information from government agencies and non-governmental organizations as well as a section on Haitian Creole and French-language materials are included. Links to background information on earthquakes and subsequent health issues, such as public health assessments, emergency surgical care, and sanitary care of human remains, are also provided.

New PubMed Interface Now Available in Beta Version

NCBI has released the new PubMed interface in Beta version for testing. The main changes are navigational and do not affect the main functionality behind the scenes. Please try out the new interface and then use the feedback buttons to send NLM comments about things you do and don’t like. Below are just a few tips on the new layout.

Limits and Details are only available in the Advance Search mode.
Only 5 lines (search sets) of your strategy will show. You have to click a More History button to see the whole thing if you have an extensive strategy.
Links to the MeSH database only show on the main page (at the middle - right under More Resources) and on the Advanced Search page (at the bottom under More Resources).

The preview of the redesigned PubMed is now available as a link from PubMed’s homepage or the direct URL is: http://preview.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed.

Introduction

Millions of Americans search for health information on the web every year. Whether the health information is needed for personal reasons or for a loved one, millions of health-related web pages are viewed by millions of consumers. Sometimes the information found is just what was needed. Other searches end in frustration or retrieval of inaccurate, even dangerous, information.

This guide outlines the collective wisdom of medical librarians who surf the web every day to discover quality information in support of clinical and scientific decision making by doctors, scientists, and other health practitioners responsible for the nation's health. This guide is supported by the Medical Library Association (MLA), the library organization whose primary purpose is promoting quality information for improved health and whose members were the first to realize that not all health information on the web is credible, timely, or safe.

The guide is presented in three brief sections. The first section, "Getting Started," provides tips on filtering the millions of health-related web pages through the health subsets of major search engines and using quality electronic finding tools developed by the U.S. government to do an initial screen of websites for further examination. This section is followed by a set of guidelines developed for evaluating the content of health-related websites. Wiley expects all the journals to be available again after 8:00 p.m. CDT Sunday. Links from the library will still say Blackwell and will go to the new site.

LRC Summer Schedule

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) will start shorter summer hours on Sunday, May 18. Regular hours will resume on Sunday, August 3.

Summer Hours are:
Sunday: 2pm - 10pm
Monday - Thursday: 7:30am - 10pm
Friday: 7:30am - 6pm
Saturday: 9am - 6pm

The LRC will also be closed on the following holiday weekends:
Saturday, May 24 - Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day Weekend)
Friday, July 4 - Sunday, July 6 (Independence Day weekend)

The May issue of NIH News in Health, the monthly newsletter bringing you practical health news and tips based on the latest NIH research, is now online. Health topics featured in this issue include food allergies, air pollution, asthma, and more.

New Multilingual Feature on MedlinePlus

MedlinePlus has released a multilingual feature which provides access to high quality health information in languages other than English and Spanish. This new service benefits people who prefer to read consumer health information in their native language. The new collection contains over 2,500 links to information in more than 40 languages and covers nearly 250 Health Topics.

Users can navigate the new collection of health information in multiple languages either by language or by topic. A page listing all of the languages covered is linked from the MedlinePlus homepage. Users can browse these languages or link to the page listing all of the topics covered. In addition, a languages box will display on the English Health Topic pages. The languages box lists the languages with links on that topic in MedlinePlus. The languages box also links users to the collection of health information in multiple languages.

An interactive world map teaches users about the number of people who speak nine of the languages in the MedlinePlus collection. The languages – Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese – are among those most frequently spoken at home in the United States other than English, according to the U.S. census.

The MedlinePlus collection of health information in multiple languages is not meant to be comprehensive. MedlinePlus staff selects materials according to quality guidelines. Materials must be produced by the United States Federal government or a U.S.-based organization, such as a medical association or a hospital. The producer must describe the translation, review and updating process. In addition, the content must be appropriate for a U.S. consumer audience, and it must be authoritative and current. MedlinePlus staff also looks for English equivalents to the multilingual information.

Color Printer Price Drop and Color Photocopies Available

The price of color printing in the Library has gone down to 20 cents per page. A new color photocopier is now available by the Circulation Desk. Copies are 20 cents per page for color and remain at 10 cents per page for B/W. The new copier required a new copy card reader. The good news is this reader accepts the new U.S. Treasury bills and works in cash amounts.

If your print card does not work in the new photocopier, please see the Circulation Staff and they will convert it for you. ALL converted cards will work in any GoPrint Release Stations and the remaining photocopier.
