Note to APA Style Community: Sixth Edition Corrections
From Mary Lynn Skutley of APA, posted on the APA Style Blog:
We are grateful for the lively and thoughtful discussion that has resulted from the release of the sixth edition of the Publication Manual on this blog and also among other APA Style communities. We recently learned of a post on a listserv regarding corrections to the manual that has caused much alarm among members of the APA Style community and, despite good intentions, includes misleading and erroneous information. We would like to clarify the nature and extent of the errors in the sixth edition and tell you how you can access the corrections online.

Featured Book - MRSA and Stapholococcal Infections
The Library will be featuring an item from each month's new book book list. This month's featured item is the book MRSA and Staphylococcal Infections by Hernan R. Chang.
"Despite the large amount of information available through books, Internet sites, and libraries, more and more people with staphylococcal and MRSA infections present to their primary care physicians offices, urgent care centers, and emergency rooms. The disease seems to continue to spread. Most people with history of MRSA colonization get a reassuring answer when they ask about their contagiousness. The plain truth is that they are potentially contagious. In order to understand the magnitude of this epidemic and to realize how the appearance of MRSA has and will influence our lives and our culture, consider the classic handshake. The handshake will never again me the same after MRSA. The information presented in this book is intended to provide general understanding of MRSA and Staphylococcal infections." - Amazon product description.

Friday, October 2, 2009
Noon - 1pm

Presented by Keith Freeman, Office of Educational Development
Many instructors consider live, personal interaction to be the most valuable element of teaching and learning. Wimba Classroom allows educators and students to build relationships by combining interactive technologies with instructional best practices.
Educators and students can engage in verbal and nonverbal communication to increase psychological closeness among learners. Designed exclusively for education, Wimba Classroom focuses attention on the content and speaker, not on the technology.
This session will cover:
--Do More with your MP4 – Easily create and distribute MP4 files to an iPhone, Blackboard, YouTube or even Facebook so students can access content anytime, anyplace.
--Lecture Capture – Capturing classroom activity and making it available for review and reuse strengthens student comprehension. Record the audio, video, chat, whiteboard or simply capture the traditional offline lecture environment.

Finding and Evaluating Health Information
Have you ever been curious how medical librarians find and evaluate health information? The Medical Library Association has "A User's Guide to Finding and Evaluating Health Information on the Web."
Here is an excerpt...
Introduction
Millions of Americans search for health information on the web every year. Whether the health information is needed for personal reasons or for a loved one, millions of health-related web pages are viewed by millions of consumers. Sometimes the information found is just what was needed. Other searches end in frustration or retrieval of inaccurate, even dangerous, information.
This guide outlines the collective wisdom of medical librarians who surf the web every day to discover quality information in support of clinical and scientific decision making by doctors, scientists, and other health practitioners responsible for the nation's health. This guide is supported by the Medical Library Association (MLA), the library organization whose primary purpose is promoting quality information for improved health and whose members were the first to realize that not all health information on the web is credible, timely, or safe.
The guide is presented in three brief sections. The first section, "Getting Started," provides tips on filtering the millions of health-related web pages through the health subsets of major search engines and using quality electronic finding tools developed by the U.S. government to do an initial screen of websites for further examination. This section is followed by a set of guidelines developed for evaluating the content of health-related websites. The final section provides additional information of interest to consumers searching for health-related information on the web.
